Rhinoceros Beetle Larvae (Grubs): Identification & Control in Coconut Farms
How to identify rhinoceros beetle larvae in manure pits and decaying coconut waste, where they breed, and how to manage grubs and adult beetles.
Where the larvae breed
Rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros) lays eggs in decaying organic matter — farmyard manure pits, compost heaps, rotting coconut logs and stumps, coir pith piles and heaps of decaying husk. Adults fly out from these sites and bore into the crown of nearby palms, so breeding sites within and around the garden are the real source of damage.
How to identify the grub
The grub is creamy white, fat and curved into a distinct C shape, with a hard reddish-brown head capsule, three pairs of true legs, and a dark, swollen rear end (the gut contents show through). Full-grown grubs reach roughly 6–10 cm. They lie on their side and cannot walk properly on a flat surface — a quick field test that separates them from other soil larvae.
Signs on the palm (adult stage)
Adults bore into the base of the youngest fronds. When the leaf opens you see the classic V-shaped or triangular cuts across the leaflets. A bore hole at the crown with chewed fibrous frass pushed out is the confirming sign. Repeated attacks weaken the crown and open entry points for red palm weevil.
Managing the breeding sites
Turn over manure pits and compost heaps once a month and hand-collect and destroy the grubs — this is still the single most effective step. Remove and split rotting coconut stumps and logs. Cover manure pits with a layer of soil or a mesh so females cannot lay eggs. Level and dry out standing heaps of husk and coir pith.
Biological control
The green muscardine fungus Metarhizium anisopliae applied to manure pits and breeding heaps infects grubs; treated pits show white-then-green fungal growth on dead grubs. The Oryctes baculovirus (OrNV) is used to infect adults, which then spread it back into breeding sites. Both are widely recommended by state agriculture departments for coconut gardens — check with your local Krishi Vigyan Kendra for supply.
Trapping the adults
Breeding-site sanitation reduces the next generation, but adult beetles already flying in the garden must be trapped. Pheromone bucket traps baited with a rhinoceros beetle lure catch adults before they bore into the crown. Hang traps at about 1–1.5 m above ground at the garden border, spaced through the plot, and empty them regularly.
Next steps
Clean the breeding sites, then trap the adults that are already flying.
